What Is Agent Attestation?
Agent attestation is the practice of producing signed, verifiable proof that an AI agent operated within its mandate over a defined period: which policies applied, what evidence was recorded, who signed off. Third parties such as auditors, insurers, or enterprise customers can verify the attestation without access to the underlying raw data.
Who needs this
Organizations that need to demonstrate agent trustworthiness to someone outside the building: an auditor preparing a compliance opinion, an insurer pricing coverage, a procurement team evaluating an agent-powered vendor, a partner deciding whether your agent may touch their API. Attestation turns internal governance into an artifact others can rely on.
What makes an attestation trustworthy
An attestation is only as credible as the record behind it and the independence of whoever produced that record. Self-attestation from editable logs is marketing. Trustworthy attestation requires a separation of roles, the same one every serious audit regime uses: the party operating the system, the party recording its behavior, and the party verifying the claims cannot be the same entity with the same incentives.
The structural rule that follows: the witness, whoever records the evidence, must not profit when the agent is granted more autonomy. A model vendor attesting its own agents fails that test by construction. Player, referee, and scorekeeper have to be different people.
Data point · the three roles
| Operator | Runs the agents, benefits from their autonomy. Cannot credibly attest itself. |
| Witness | Records every action into a tamper-evident ledger. Must be structurally independent of agent and model vendors. |
| Verifier | Checks the evidence and signs the attestation: auditor, insurer, or regulator. Needs hash proofs, not raw data. |
Verification without raw data access works through hash references: the artifact carries checksums of the record, not its contents. Sovereignty-compatible by design.
